Voter Protection-Election Judge Training

NON-PARTISON---FREE TRAINING FOR:
- Anyone involved in voter protection
- Potential election judges
- Current election judges

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008   1:00-3:00
Grand Casino Mille Lacs Convention Center
Winter Room

Voting should be easy and accessible for all, but not all voters experience it that way.  Significant barriers make voting difficult or impossible for many eligible voters:
People of color • Students • New immigrants • People with Disabilities
The elderly • Voters who don’t speak English well
Low income people who move often

There are countless stories of these and other voters having a hard time voting or being specifically targeted in suppression efforts.

Take Action Minnesota is recruiting and training Election Judges
to be strong voting rights advocates.  Election Judges can:

• Assist voters with language barriers
• Accurately inform voters of their rights
• Help voters find a way to register and vote
• Stand up for voters through any challenges

Take Action Minnesota will provide training and materials to help election judges know the law and how to respond to situations that threaten people’s right to vote.

Let’s make sure that ALL eligible voters can exercise their right to vote in 2008!!

TRAINING DESCRIPTION

Wellstone Action Fund’s Native American Leadership Program (NALP) is offering Native voter engagement trainings (NVES) for 2008, these trainings are designed specifically to address the unique legal status of tribes in tribal, federal, state level elections and provide non-partisan training in creating voter plans, registering voters, and electing leaders that best represent the interests and values of Native constituencies. NVES is a 1½ day training session and custom curriculum on voter education and mobilization Native Nonpartisan Voter Engagement Manual for participants to use in their communities.

NVES is designed to train organizations and individuals in the basic skills of voter engagement; assist them in creating voter engagement plans for their communities and assessing those plans; help them build collaborative, resource-sharing networks with other organizations; and ultimately lead to increased voter turn-out.

NVES Training Session and Curriculum - teaches skills on planning and executing effective voter engagement efforts. It focuses on planning, message development, registering and organizing Native voters, engaging with candidates, protecting the right to vote, recruiting allies, candidate accountability, and issue advocacy. Our trainers teach participants how to link their organization’s core mission to voter outreach, and show them how to create a voter engagement plan for their own communities.

Native Nonpartisan Voter Engagement Manual - the 130-page Manual is designed for participants to take back to their tribal communities after the training. This NVES resource includes legal guidelines, information on how to develop and execute voter plans, assessment tools, and examples of successful voter mobilization.
